How Busy Teachers Can Find Time For Professional Development

Today’s teachers work in a fast-paced, demanding environment. They are expected to be:
- Knowledgeable in their subject area
- Emotionally supportive to students
- Flexible and adaptable to change
- Up to date with educational trends
At the same time, their daily schedules are packed—lessons, meetings, grading, planning, and communication with parents.
So where exactly is the time for self-development supposed to fit in?
Research shows that while learning and professional development are not the same, they are closely linked and unfold throughout a teacher’s entire career (Pawan et al., 2023). Continued learning supports not only professional growth but also strengthens confidence, identity, and adaptability in the teaching role.
The Time Paradox
The most common barrier is not lack of willingness—but lack of time. Yet, data from 2023 reveals an interesting contradiction:Â
- On average, adults spend 3+ hours/day on their smartphones
- They check their phones 58 times per day (Howarth, 2023)
- They use around 40 different apps each month (Lindner, 2023)
🡒 So maybe time is available—it just gets used in other ways.
‍
Enter mobile and microlearning
This is where mobile learning offers potential. Approaches like just-in-time and just-enough learning enable bite-sized learning experiences, precisely when and where they’re needed (Shih, 2007). Research shows that mobile learning can effectively serve busy professionals by eliminating the need to be in a specific place or follow rigid schedules (Bernacki et al., 2020; Tilli et al., 2023).
Equally important is how learning is offered. Instead of feeling like yet another task, learning should be short, focused, and directly relevant to teachers' real needs—something that fits naturally into their daily routine.
Takeaway
‍Time constraints are real, but with the right tools and mindset, professional development doesn’t have to be sacrificed. When learning adapts to the teacher—rather than the other way around—it becomes much more feasible, engaging, and impactful.
